6 games to play on a family road trip

Everyone loves a family road trip, especially when there's a vacation destination at the end of it.

The open road, plenty of yummy snacks and ice-cold Coke Zero to quench your thirst, no one would blame you for looking forward to the journey as much as the end point!

But we also know it can sometimes get stressful keeping the kids occupied for long periods of time in the car.

So rather than giving them Tablets and screens to occupy them, we like to do things the old-fashioned and wholesome way.

So here are 6 of the best road trip games to keep everyone happy and entertained on the road.

  1. I spy: An oldie but a goodie. And what's even better is that it has educational value in that it can help the kids practice their spelling. The rules are simple: pick an item either inside or outside the car, tell everyone the first letter of the word, then let the guessing commence.
  2. Name the artist: This game is perfect when everyone is getting a little sleepy and you might want to wind down on the fun. And all you need is the radio and the open road. The first person to name the singer or group when a song comes on the radio gets a point. Keep playing until you reach your destination and whoever has the most points at arrival, wins.
  3. 20 questions: The rules are simple. And that makes it a perfect family road trip game in our opinion! The first player picks out a person, place or thing. Everyone in the car then take turns asking yes or no questions about what or who it is you're thinking of. No two people should ask the same question, and no one can answer more than 20 questions. Whoever guesses the mystery object first goes next!
  4. In my suitcase: This one is side-splittingly funny and a real test of memory and concentration. The first person starts by saying, “I’m going on vacation and I packed…” Finish the sentence with any item that begins with the letter A. The next player must repeat the sentence said by the first player and add an item to the list beginning with the letter B. Keep going and see how many letters you can get through before someone forgets!
  5. Sing-along game: Who doesn't love a sing-along? And this road trip favourite is perfect for whiling away the hours. To play, one person starts singing a line from a popular song. The next person must then think of a song that begins with the word the last song finished on.
  6. The movie game: This is another family favourite that can literally last as long or as short as you want. Whoever is going first has to suggest a letter. For example, if they chose to begin with F, then everyone else in the car must think of movies that begin with T, like Frozen. Once you get through that category, you can begin moving through the alphabet.

Thirsty work

All that singing, spying, guessing and thinking is thirsty work. So make sure you've packed your cooler with Coke Zero for all the family to enjoy.
