A birth plan is a record of what you would like to happen during your labour and after the birth.
You don't have to have one, but you can ask your ob-gyn to help you if it's something you'd like to have.
*Disclaimer: Things don't always go according to plan so remember to be flexible and don't panic if your birth plan gets scrapped. The only thing that really matters is the safest possible delivery for you and your baby.
What is a birth plan?
There's no right or wrong way to write a birth plan, but it may include details like:
- Be out of bed (walking around or sitting up) during labour
- Labour/birth in water
- Pain meds
- Play music, dim lighting, use incense, scented candles
- Have partner take photos or videos
- Labour with an exercise ball
- Preferred birthing positions.

Why a birth plan?
A birth plan can help you feel empowered and more relaxed and prepared for your labour and birth.
But some women find it makes them anxious and that they won't be able to cope if their plan doesn't work out.
What's important is that you talk to your ob-gyn and voice any fears and concerns you might have.
