A teacher in the US has shared her advice on 5 things parents should never do.
Melissa Salguero, the music director at Wings Academy High School in New York City, has learned a lot after 15 years in the classroom.
So here are the 5 things she says parents should never do.
5 things parents should never do, says teacher
- Never punish a child for receiving 'bad' grades: If your child comes home with a less-than-impressive mark on an essay or homework assignment, try not to scold. She cites increased anxiety and lower motivation and self-esteem as possible effects for children who are penalized for poor grades. Support and understanding are what they need.
- Never miss a child's school performance (unless it can't be helped!): It shows them you care and value their hard work. But if you really can't make it, ask a friend or relative to stand in for you.
- Never participate in a school fundraiser: While the proceeds of school fundraisers can help buy school supplies and fund field trips along with other extracurricular activities, they're not always affordable for the average parent. And contests in which students compete for how much money they can raise can exclude kids if they don't meet expectations.
- Never discourage children from making mistakes: Making mistakes is not only an inevitable reality, but also a chance for kids to learn about themselves. Through problem solving, children grow their confidence and become resilient.
- Criticise the child, not the behaviour: We've added in our own here. When your child acts up, rather than telling them they are bad, tell them their behavior is unacceptable and suggest alternatives.
Parenting isn't easy
Parenting isn't easy and no parent is perfect!
What's important is that you try your best and always communicate with your kids.
Never forget to tell them you love them, and always ensure you apologise when you're wrong.
