Going on vacation with kids is a very different experience that's not without its stresses.
On the one hand you're excited to kick back and relax, but on the other you're overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff you need to pack and worried about how the children will cope out of routine.
Unfortunately we don't have a magic wand to make your family vacation a stress-free affair.
But our top tips will definitely make things easier for you.
How to travel stress-free with kids
- Book well in advance: The earlier you book, the more likely you are to grab some cheap deals and your preferred options - and the longer you have to plan and prepare.
- Explain the trip: Talk to your kids about the vacation, show them pictures and even get them their own little pull-along suitcase. Letting them know what to expect will help.
- Take it slow and leave plenty of time: If you're flying, leave extra time to check in, get through security, and make it to your gate. Also factor in a million toilet stops and a few tantrums for good measure! Even if you're not holidaying by plane, all parts of your journey with kids will take longer than expected so be prepared.
- Aim to travel late morning or early afternoon: If it's possible to choose, pick an off-peak time to travel as less crowds and mayhem will help your stress levels and definitely make it easier with kids. Also travelling late morning or early afternoon means less interference with bedtimes.
- Don't overpack: Your biggest fear when travelling with kids, especially where small babies are concerned, is probably forgetting something vital. But you're actually more likely to overpack than under-pack. And unless you're going to the moon, you'll be able to buy whatever you forgot when you get there.
- Make a list: Write a list of everything you need to bring, check it off as you pack, and then do it again when you're packing up at the end of your vacation.
- Pack your snacks: Hangry kids are no fun for anyone! And buying food at an airport for example is very expensive. So pack their favourite snacks to keep them going and to distract them if and when needed.
- Think about your stroller: You need to make sure your stroller is lightweight, can be folded up easily, and is easily carried. But you might also want to buy a cheap one just for travelling in case your main stroller gets damaged.
- Pre-book as much as possible: The days of meandering around new towns and cities and taking a chance with bookings are gone once you have kids. You need to plan your vacation like a military operation so that you always know where you're going and when!
- Choose a place with a kitchen: Some families find it easier to book an all-inclusive resort for vacation as it takes much of the stress out of travel. But if that's not for you, at the very least book somewhere with a kitchen or make sure the room has a kettle, fridge and even a microwave for convenience.
- Locate a nearby laundry: If you're staying in a hotel rather than an apartment or AirBnB, you'll need to find a local launderette you can use. Laundry at the hotel will cost a fortune and being able to wash and dry your kids clothes means you'll have to pack less to begin with.
- Call ahead: Make sure that your accommodation has the things you need, like a crib in the room, an elevator, or even a kids club.
- Charge up all devices and download things to watch: This will be a lifesaver so don't forget it. You can't always rely on having wifi, or access to a TV. Make sure you also pack chargers and earphones in your hand luggage.
- A new toy: It's a good idea to bring a new toy for your kids as it will keep them busy for much longer than something they're used to.
- Spare outfits: You never know when there'll be a little accident, or if one of your kids will get travel sick. So pack a change of clothes, wipes, a plastic bag, and extra diapers etc in your hand luggage.
- Your luggage: The general rule of thumb is that you should never bring more bags than hands, although this might be difficult depending on the size of your family. Our top tip would be to invest in some good back packs for you and the kids to make things easier.
- Invest in double-duty products: This might well be one of our best bits of advice. Where possible, buy things that double-up as another essential piece of kit. For example, a stroller that converts to a car seat and luggage that converts to nap pods.
- Pack a good first aid kit: It’s always a good idea to take a few over-the-counter medications your family might need while travelling, as well as the basics like antiseptic, band aids and a thermometer.
- Consider harnesses for your kids: It can be extremely stressful trying to hold onto kids and follow them around in crowded holiday spots. So best advice for toddlers is to take a harness that means they can still walk and explore, but y0u get peace of mind.
- Buy tickets in advance: Booking online in advance can save you money and help you avoid long and stressful queues! And make sure to always ask for child and family discount.
- Accept things will go wrong: All the planning in the world can't cover every eventuality. And kids are extremely unpredictable. So just go with it, accept things won't be perfect, and enjoy making memories.
